MAGAZINE WRITING AND EDITING
in Personal Service
As a writer and editor, I've been providing content for national magazines for more than 25 years.
My writing appears regularly in Real Simple, O, the Oprah Magazine, Parents, Martha Stewart Living, Good Housekeeping, Health, Family Circle, and many other publications. I’ve written about everything from rent-a-chickens to fear of clowns, but I specialize in service pieces on topics such as parenting, psychology, and health. In 2016, I was honored to win a National Magazine Award in the personal service category.
For more than a decade, I was a staff editor at the late-lamented New Age Journal, later reincarnated as Martha Stewart's Whole Living. (I still don't know what color my aura is...) I also served as executive editor of Dr. Andrew Weil’s Self Healing, a national health newsletter covering integrative medicine.
I graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in English and have a MA in English Literature from Boston College. So if you want some Chaucer references thrown into that 1,500 word piece on taming kitchen clutter, I'm your writer.
I’ve been on both sides of the desk. As a writer, I think like an editor. I "get" an assignment with minimum instruction. I know firsthand what heck breaks out if a piece comes in after deadline, with shaky sources, or filled with mysterious holes [“Main point of this graf TK”]. In these lean and mean times, I make your job easier by providing clean, inviting copy, delivered 100 percent drama-free.

MOM BOOBS: AN OWNER'S MANUAL
I long to clone Jen. When I assign her a story, I know it's going to be funny, cogent, and full of answers to all my questions ... plus answers to questions I didn't even know I had. (And it will be submitted on deadline and impeccably footnoted.)
She has brought a rare mix of wit and reportorial curiosity to topics such as backyard worm composting, community gardening, toy first aid, childhood phobias, positive psychology, and low-maintenance pets. Her stories are a delight, and so is she.
Former Deputy Editor, Real Simple
[Current: Executive Editor, O, The Oprah Magazine]
Jen has a sharp, clear, and witty writing style and a tireless ability to dig deep for the whole story. It’s a challenge to find writers with the aptitude to tackle complex topics and produce writing that is both smart and entertaining. Jen has that ability.
As enjoyable as it is to read Jen's writing, it was equally pleasant to work with her as her editor. She accepted editorial instruction with an ear for detail, completed her assignments on time every time, and responded to editorial feedback on her work gracefully and diligently, without the defensiveness I sometimes experienced with other writers. She is among the best writers I’ve worked with.
Former Senior Editor, Disney’s
[Current: Writer for SportsIllustrated.com]
As a writer, Jen has that most elusive quality: voice. In her writing for New Age Journal
and FamilyFun, she found a way to be herself, with that wonderful sense of humor, even as she spoke the language of each readership.
Writing is a performance, and Jen always knows her audience
